Ragi (Millet) for babies -- Recipe

Here goes the preparation of ragi as drink for babies less than a year

Ingredients : Ragi, raisin (dry grapes), cashew
  • Take two tablespoons of ragi (wash ragi thoroughly) and soak it in water the previous night along with 4 raisins and a cashew.
  • On the next day, grind this in mixer and take the juice out. This juice will look like thick milk.
  • In slow fire, heat this milk along with water and stir thoroughly until it becomes a thick paste.
  • Mix this paste with salt or sugar as required and give it for baby. This paste would become much thicker if we keep it aside for sometime. In that case, it can again be blended and given.
  • On the next day, instead of cashew, badam can be soaked and grinded.

Experienced Ragi to be very nutritious for babies. Started giving it for Akil after he completed 120 days and from then on, his health improved drastically. Initially, I was reluctant to give cashew and badam at this early stage as I had my own doubts if it will get digested. So, started with just soaking ragi alone for 3 days and then added raisins for 3 days and then, started adding cashew and badam.

Usually, Ragi powder is taken and boiled with water to give for babies. But this way of preparation is much more nutritious than giving powder. Heard from my friend that Keralites (People of Kerala, India) start giving ragi from 28th day of babies... In Tamil, ragi is called as Kezhvaragu.
